Welcome to Shawnee Hills
The history of commercial Southern Illinois viticulture dates back to the early 1980’s. This was when the first vineyard was planted
with wine grape varieties, which had previously been deemed unfit to be grown in our area. Within a short time, however, it
was proven that award winning wines could be produced and more acres of grapes began to be cultivated.
It is these grapes that attracted wineries and winemakers from various regions. Next, Southern
Illinois experienced incredible growth, exploding to over 20 different commercial
wineries, and many more private vineyards.
